What is a Proof of Concept?
A Proof of Concept is an experimental activity designed to assess the feasibility of an idea, material, process or technology.
It is not yet the final product, nor does it necessarily involve a complete prototype.
Its purpose is to answer a simple question:
Can this solution actually work?
To answer it, the most critical aspects of the project are identified and tested through targeted experiments.
Why is it so important?
Many technologies show promising results in the laboratory but encounter difficulties when transferred to real-world applications.
Performance, reproducibility, raw material availability, compatibility with industrial processes and costs can significantly change the scenario.
A PoC makes it possible to address these aspects before investing significant resources in scale-up.

From laboratory to application
A good Proof of Concept should not simply demonstrate that something works once.
It should help determine why it works, what its limitations are and what needs to be improved before moving to the next stage.
The process may include preliminary analysis, formulation development, laboratory testing, material characterisation and trials with industrial partners.
The results provide a basis for deciding whether to modify the technology, proceed to prototyping or begin scale-up.
PoC as a tool to reduce risk
Experimentation can also reveal that a particular approach does not work as expected.
And discovering this during a PoC can be extremely valuable.
Identifying a limitation before scale-up is far less costly than discovering it once the process has already reached industrial production.
The value of a Proof of Concept therefore lies not only in demonstrating that an idea works, but also in generating the information needed to make better development decisions.
